Kandy’s rugby lovers are happy and proud over the national rugby team’s performance at the Asia Division 1 tournament. Rugby fans over here celebrate this victory and our talented players showed what stuff the team’s players are made of. The Asia Rugby Division 1 championship was held at the Racecourse ground in Colombo. The Sri Lankan ruggerites lived up to expectations because the team comprised a relatively young line-up. However these players played their hearts out and beat the strong Kazakhstan side to record a seven-try win. The winners collected their points through seven tries and five conversions while Kazakhstan managed to score one try and a conversion. The final whistle points was 45 points against 7.

Sri Lanka Rugby headed by former top class rugby player Group. Capt. (Retd) Nalin de Silva and his committee must be lauded for organizing this tournament without any blemishes. Our rugby team should be commended for their excellent performance against the heavy Kazakhstan team. When you consider the history of our countries, rugby encounters have been played between these two nations. When the two teams met at the 2007 Asian championships Kazakhstan beat Sri Lanka by 24 points to 17.
